Politics Desk: On Sunday, special forces in Guinea captured power in a coup. They arrested the president, imposing an indefinite curfew on the West African country.

A uniformed officer flanked by soldiers toting assault rifles in a video sent to AFP, “We have decided, after having taken the president, to dissolve the constitution.”

The officer also confirmed that Guinea’s land and air borders had been closed and the government dissolved.

AFP received An earlier video by the putschists showed President Alpha Conde sitting on a sofa surrounded by troops. The 83-year-old leader refused to answer a question from one soldier about whether he had been maltreated.

On Sunday, an announcement came from the Junta that a nationwide curfew was “until further notice”, saying it would convene Conde’s cabinet ministers at 11:00 am (1100 GMT) Monday.

The statement added, “Any refusal to attend will be considered a rebellion.”

The military will replace the positions of the country’s governors and other top administrators, the statement said.

In the appearance on state television, members of the junta were wearing berets and dressed in fatigues, unarmed.
